Generally the enumerator spelled the name the way it sounds. i.e. He wrote "Hoks"; the name is "Hawkes". I used the correct spelling from my own database in most cases but always check the original where you have doubts.For the most part, the enumerator's handwriting was very good but some idiot marked all over the entries obscuring many of them. I suspect someone in StatsCan compiled the information using their own coding using the original as a worksheet.

Age = Less then one year is expressed by fraction of 12 i.e. 4/12 is 4 months old. 0/12 is less then one month.

Occasionally the enumerator used "Dom" in Relationship to Head. It means Domestic but may be misleading according to our understanding of the word. The person may have been a visitor, or boarder.

Type of house: W3 means Wooden with 3 bedrooms or simply rooms. Some houses are listed W2/7 or W/2/10. No houses that I knew of had that many bedrooms.

The information gathered got more extensive with each succeeding ones although they omitted collecting actual birth dates. But for some reason it was important to know where the parents were born and what religion they practiced.
