Wed Jan 1, 1936 -- Didn't make any New Year's calls today, cooked and did housework most of the day. Clarence Buckingham came to work here. 3 New years have gone by since Will went away, Jul 1, 1933. Thu Jan 2, 1936 -- Luella Buckingham came here for dinner. I went down to Bea's with her after dinner. After she went home I stayed until 4 p.m. and helped with sewing. Fri Jan 3, 1936 -- It rained all day hard. I did not work very hard. The boys were around the house all day. Sat Jan 4, 1936 -- I worked in forenoon cooking and other work. In after-noon Lizzie Graham was here. In evening I was down to Harvey's to listed to radio, stayed until 11:30 p.m. Amos Farrell's baby died. Sun Jan 5, 1936 -- Did not have SS today. John & Bea & Annie went to Fosterville and attended the funeral of Amos Farrell's baby girl which was born on Christmas day. I was home all day except for a call at Ellis' in p.m. Mon Jan 6, 1936 -- Laurel & Norman were yarding wood for the house. We washed in forenoon and Bea & Helen were here in afternoon. Annie went to town with Phyllis Graham. Laurel went to Station for school teacher. Tue Jan 7, 1936 -- We churned in morning. In p.m. I went calling. Lizzie Graham & I called on Mrs Don Boone, Bea, & Mrs Guy Leeman. Annie was sick. School began. Wed Jan 8, 1936 -- Laurel & Clarence B. Sawed & split wood in door yard. Jack English was here for dinner. John helped Norman yard wood. Thu Jan 9, 1936 -- I cooked in forenoon. John, Bea & I went to town in p.m. I got some turnips from Geo Gould. We called at the Ladies Aid a few minutes. Fri Jan 10, 1936 -- It stormed. The boys went to work in morning but came back at noon. A big snow storm. Sat Jan 11, 1936 -- Fine day. Boys went to work in morning. Mail did not get through on account of bad roads. Clarence B did not go home. Sun Jan 12, 1936 -- Slept late. N & C went down to Higgs in forenoon and to Merrill Graham's camp in afternoon. We had SS in p.m. John started to Doten's camp with team. Mon Jan 13, 1936 -- Villa washed in forenoon. I finished letter to Lizzie Taylor and called on Jennie in forenoon. I cut me out a house dress in p.m. The boys were working at wood. Tue Jan 14, 1936 -- Very cold day. The mail made its trip. Villa & I did usual things. Wed Jan 15, 1936 -- Was invited up to Ellis Graham's to a tacking bee. Lizzie Graham, Lizzie Harvey, Bea & myself were there. Ethel came in afternoon. We tacked two quilts. Thu Jan 16, 1936 -- It rained all forenoon, high wind and snow all afternoon. I paid remainder of 1934 school tax, $8.91. Clarence B went home after dinner. Fri Jan 17, 1936 -- Churned in forenoon. Clarence came back and they worked in p.m. Very cold. I finished dress. Carl was here in evening. Leslie Boone left home in early morning. Sat Jan 18, 1936 -- A fine day but cold. The mail made its trip. I got 7 letters today, all from American office. Carl went to town with his dog. Helen & Annie here in afternoon. Rawleigh man here in forenoon. Sun Jan 19, 1936 -- Had SS in p.m., 12 present. Laurel was sick with cold. Bea came up after SS to read letters I got on Saturday. Mon Jan 20, 1936 -- It stormed most of day, the boys did not go to work. Laurel was still used up with cold. King George V died. Tue Jan 21, 1936 -- The boys went to work. Laurel did not feel well enough to go. We washed and did the everyday work. Wed Jan 22, 1936 -- Jennie came in on her way down to Bea's to tell us King George was dead. I was down to Bea's awhile in the afternoon. Mrs D Boone went after Leslie. Thu Jan 23, 1936 -- The boys went to work in morning though it was storming but the storm got worse and they came home at noon. Norman finished his ski. Fri Jan 24, 1936 -- Very cold. The boys worked all day at the wood. Carl & Gordon were in in the evening. Sat Jan 25, 1936 -- Clear & cold. The boys went to work. Our mail went through the first time this week. I got a letter from Evie Smith. Sun Jan 26, 1936 -- We had SS in afternoon. Vivian and Melvin Buckingham walked down to Ridge. Vivian & Bea & Miss Barton were here for supper. Mon Jan 27, 1936 -- We washed. Bea came up and brought material and we made soap. Lizzie Graham was here awhile. I put mat in frames. Tue Jan 28, 1936 -- It stormed in forenoon. My clothes blowed off line, we found most of them. King George V's funeral. Wed Jan 29, 1936 -- Emptied bag of Regal flour in barrel. Thu Jan 30, 1936 -- The mail went today. I sent letters to Nora Boone & Addie Graham and an order to Eaton's. Called on Jennie in forenoon. Fri Jan 31, 1936 -- I worked on mat in afternoon. Bea & children and Lizzie Graham were here in evening. We had pleasant evening. Sat Feb 1, 1936 -- The men snow plowed the road from Poplar Brook to Forest City. The mail got over. Carl & dog went to town. I sent letter to Mrs Don Foster. Sun Feb 2, 1936 -- A very windy day. We did not have SS. Laurel was here awhile in evening. Clarence came back about 8 o'clock from home. Mon Feb 3, 1936 -- We churned and I worked on mat. Very cold. Tue Feb 4, 1936 -- Villa washed. Wes Buckingham was here for dinner. Bea was here in afternoon. Wed Feb 5, 1936 -- No entry. Thu Feb 6, 1936 -- I was down to Bea's all day, made a pair ski pants for Annie. Fri Feb 7, 1936 -- I got a letter from Lizzie Taylor. Sat Feb 8, 1936 -- Received bank book from Danforth Trust company and check for $1.33. Bea's birthday. Annie was here in afternoon. Sun Feb 9, 1936 -- John came home in forenoon. We had SS in afternoon. 12 present. Mon Feb 10, 1936 -- We washed in forenoon. I worked on mat in afternoon. Word came to Fosterville Sat, Feb 8, that Albert Gaskin died in Saint John. Tue Feb 11, 1936 -- to Thu Feb 13, 1936 -- No entry. Fri Feb 14, 1936 -- Bea walked to town. Carl went down in afternoon and brought me up some kerosene. Sat Feb 15, 1936 -- No entry. Sun Feb 16, 1936 -- We had SS in p.m. In evening Lizzie Harvey & Jennie Graham and children were in. Mon Feb 17, 1936 -- It stormed, the boys came home from work at noon. Tue Feb 18, 1936 -- It stormed all day. Bea was here in afternoon. I worked on mat. Wed Feb 19, 1936 -- A very windy cold day. Bea & Lizzie Graham, Lizzie Harvey & I were up to Jennie's to a sewing bee. Thu Feb 20, 1936 -- No entry. Fri Feb 21, 1936 -- The men snow plowed the road in forenoon. Mon Feb 24, 1936 -- Bea, Lizzie Harvey & young people were here in evening. Tue Feb 25, 1936 -- We churned in forenoon. I sent 20 pounds butter to Canterbury by mail. I finished hooked rug. Wed Feb 26, 1936 -- Villa ironed, I cooked in a.m. I went down to Bea's in p.m. Bea & Lizzie Harvey were here in evening. Thu Feb 27, 1936 -- Will's birthday. He would be 72 if living. I received goods from Canterbury by mail. Finished letter to Grace G. Fri Feb 28, 1936 -- No entry. Sat Feb 29, 1936 -- The teacher, Miss Barton, was here visiting in p.m. Burleigh Buckingham stayed all night and until next p.m. Sun Mar 1, 1936 -- Had SS in afternoon. Miss Barton went for first time. Laurel was out to Mountain for weekend. Mon Mar 2, 1936 -- The boys worked at wood. The old white cow freshened, a male calf. Tue Mar 3, 1936 -- No entry. Wed Mar 4, 1936 -- No entry. Thu Mar 5, 1936 -- I put mat in frames. Bea, Lizzie Harvey and young folks were here in evening. Fri Mar 6, 1936 -- Luella Buckingham & 2 little boys came down to Bea's in a.m. and were here to supper and part of evening. Sat Mar 7, 1936 -- Vivian B came down to Bea's to make a visit. Clarence B got done working here. Sun Mar 8, 1936 -- We had SS in afternoon and a sing up to Ellis Graham's in evening. Lizzie Graham was here for supper. Mon Mar 9, 1936 -- Was stormy all day. We washed in forenoon. Laurel & Norman worked at wood all day. Tue Mar 10, 1936 -- We churned in forenoon. Bea & Vivian came in afternoon and stayed all evening. Laurel & I went to town for ice saw in a.m. Wed Mar 11, 1936 -- Bea and Vivian walked to town in forenoon. We went down in evening to take ice saw back and shop at Melzie's store. Bea & Vivian came back with us. Thu Mar 12, 1936 -- It rained very hard all day, took nearly all the snow off the fields, made the roads impassable for teams. No mail. Fri Mar 13, 1936 -- I worked on mat all day. Cooked some. The men from town shoveled on road in afternoon. Sat Mar 14, 1936 -- No mail. Vivian went home. Carl went with her for weekend at Fosterville. Sun Mar 15, 1936 -- A fine day. We had SS p.m. The men shoveled roads to get Patterson's horse home. He got down in woods. They brought him home on long sled. Mon Mar 16, 1936 -- Washed. The boys worked at wood. One three year old heifer freshened. A male calf. I canned 7 pints beef, worked on mat. Tue Mar 17, 1936 -- Churned in morning. I worked on mat in p.m. Charles Veysey died at Fosterville. Wed Mar 18, 1936 -- I was canning more mean. Jennie & Jean were here for tea. Charles Foster died at Monticello, Me. Thu Mar 19, 1936 -- I canned 3 pints roast pork, made head cheese, cut off dress for Phyllis Graham, worked on it in afternoon. It rained hard. Fri Mar 20, 1936 -- Made mincemeat in a.m., in p.m. cleaned separator and put it together. Went to Jennie's visiting and finished Phyllis' dress. Sat Mar 21, 1936 -- I cooked, cleaned shed in forenoon, mended some and read papers in p.m. Helen was here awhile. Carl went to town. Sun Mar 22, 1936 -- Carl & I took walk over in pasture a.m. Went to SS in p.m., attendance 17. Called at Bea's. It rained all afternoon. Mon Mar 23, 1936 -- Laurel took team to Orient for gasoline and 4 gal kerosene for me. Tue Mar 24, 1936 -- Laurel & Norma went to Canterbury with car. We churned, I printed up 7 pounds butter. Wed Mar 25, 1936 -- Lizzie Graham & little Gladys were here and told us of the death of Mrs Ida Foster. Moved Alfred Howe's sawing machine down here. Thu Mar 26, 1936 -- Clarence Gould operated on for hernia in Aroostook hospital, Houlton, Me. Fri Mar 27, 1936 -- Had trouble getting engine started to saw wood. Took pictures of machine and Norman and car at Higgs. Sat Mar 28, 1936 -- No entry. Sun Mar 29, 1936 -- We had SS in p.m. Mr & Mrs Guy Cropley were on Ridge calling. I stayed with Lizzie Graham for supper. Mon Mar 30, 1936 -- Laurel took car and went to Woodstock for part for sawing machine. I went with him to Clarence Graham's and spent the day. Tue Mar 31, 1936 -- Laurel went to Canterbury for piece of machinery. I went with him to visit Nora Boone who is very poorly. Wed Apr 1, 1936 -- The boys sawed wood today, had Wesley Farrell helping. I finished my rug. Thu Apr 2, 1936 -- Snowed about 4 inches. I made a dress. Fri Apr 3, 1936 -- Jean Graham's birthday. I had supper up there. Took Howe's sawing machine home, brought back Wesley Farrell's. Sat Apr 4, 1936 -- Hanford Gould stayed here all night. Bea was here in evening. Sun Apr 5, 1936 -- Helen, Annie, Marjorie Wood, Alta Gould were here in a.m. M. Gould & granddaughters went down to Geo Gould's for dinner. Carl & Herbert Howe here for dinner. Had SS in p.m. attendance 19. Mon Apr 6, 1936 -- A boy born to Merril & Lydia Graham at the Point. Tue Apr 7, 1936 -- In evening Norman took Bea, Carl & I to town. I stayed down to George Gould's to visit. Wed Apr 8, 1936 -- I awoke in morning, ground was covered with snow, 4 inches deep. In afternoon it clear. Josie & I called on Mrs Veysey and Mrs H Clark and I stayed and had tea with Mr & Mrs Lewis. Thu Apr 9, 1936 -- In morning I called on Myrtle Boone, Mrs Joe Clark & Mrs Omar Patterson, then went to Ladies Aid, worked on quilt and had dinner. Met at Mrs Blanchard's. Fri Apr 10, 1936 -- Had dinner with Mrs Blanchard, called on Florence Cropley, was in cemetery a short time, visited & had tea at Elmer Leeman's. Came home after tea. Lizzie Harvey & Etta were here in evening. Sat Apr 11, 1936 -- Cooked and made fudge for Easter. Helen was here in afternoon. Sun Apr 12, 1936 -- Easter Sunday. John & Bea & family, except Laurel, were here for dinner. We had ice cream. Had SS in p.m. Concert at Mountain in evening. Mon Apr 13, 1936 -- We washed in a.m. and I fixed dress for Helen. In p.m. I had call to Fred Graham's, Ethel was sick. A boy was born during the afternoon, weight 10 pounds. Tue Apr 14, 1936 -- In afternoon I went to Bea's, we called at Graham's. Annie Wood working there, everything fine. Myrtle went home. Wed Apr 15, 1936 -- I cooked some in morning, went to Graham's, washed & dressed baby, and attended to Ethel. Went to Bea's and sent an order for wall paper. Thu Apr 16, 1936 -- I went to Fred's in forenoon to attend to baby & Ethel. Fri Apr 17, 1936 -- I went to Graham's in forenoon. I heard Bea had lame back, I was down there in p.m., brought home Dr. Book. Sat Apr 18, 1936 -- Churned in morning. Helen was here. I was down to tend baby. I mended in p.m. Girls were here for mail. Sun Apr 19, 1936 -- I attended baby in morning. Went to SS in afternoon. Norman had cold and did not go to SS. Mon Apr 20, 1936 -- Men still sawing wood. Dealer brought Laurel a truck, Ford V8. We were down town in evening with truck. Tue Apr 21, 1936 -- Laurel went to Houlton on business. Bea & I went with him in car. Men finished sawing with dragsaw. Wed Apr 22, 1936 -- Laurel took truck down town to put body on. Hanford & Archie called here in afternoon. Thu Apr 23, 1936 -- The dealer came from Woodstock, Laurel bought truck. Laurel & Norman worked on body of truck in a.m., came up for dinner. I went back with Laurel when he went back to finish truck. Fri Apr 24, 1936 -- Laurel took truck to Woodstock, got $175 from bank. John, Bea & I went with him in cab. John bought oats. Sat Apr 25, 1936 -- Stayed home, worked most of the day. Sun Apr 26, 1936 -- Norman & I, Bea, Annie & Helen went to Haynesville. Sylvia was sick and I stayed over; about 9:20 a baby girl was born to Mr & Mrs O Stuart. Ardis Greene. Mon Apr 27, 1936 -- A long day at Smiths. Evie & I and Olive were there with Sylvia & baby. The men all went away to work. Ray came and took me down to his place for supper and brought us up in evening. Tue Apr 28, 1936 -- Ollie & I started in washing. Olive went away and Evie & I finished it. Sylvia very quiet, baby cried some. Men came back in afternoon. Evie was sick in evening. Wed Apr 29, 1936 -- Ironed some, helped take care of Sylvia & baby. Ray's family and Mrs Pressley called in afternoon. Thu Apr 30, 1936 -- Evie & I changed Sylvia's bed and clothes and baby also. Ray brought me home in p.m. Margaret & Mona & Sabin came with us. Fri May 1, 1936 -- Norman went for circular saw, C Buckingham came to help saw wood. Churned in morning. Bea was here in p.m. and we called on Edith Harvey who is sick in bed. Etta came home. Sat May 2, 1936 -- Norman was sawing wood. Laurel was trucking to Station in a.m. and went to Houlton in p.m., got American license for truck. Sun May 3, 1936 -- It was raining at times during the day. We had SS in p.m., att: 16, collected $1.20 for missionaries. Voted to have SS in morning. Mon May 4, 1936 -- Commenced house cleaning, took everything out of my room, tore off the paper, got it read for paint and paper. Churned in a.m. Tue May 5, 1936 -- I murescoed the ceiling and painted woodwork in my room white. Wed May 6, 1936 -- My birthday. I paper my room and got it ready to move back in. Thu May 7, 1936 -- I went down to Ladies Aid with Laurel, he was hauling pulp to Station. I came back with Mr Walker, the Rawleigh man. Fri May 8, 1936 -- No entry. Sat May 9, 1936 -- No entry. Sun May 10, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon. Vivian & Perley Buckingham came down to Bea's. We were all out to see Mrs Ida Farrell in evening. Mon May 11, 1936 -- Villa washed, I cleaned Norman's room. Tue May 12, 1936 -- I washed and we cleaned spare room upstairs. Wed May 13, 1936 -- Stewart E Durling, MPP died in Woodstock hospital, aged 63 years. He resided at Canterbury NB Thu May 14, 1936 -- I cleaned pantry. Bea went down town with Laurel to attend Ladies Aid, stayed until evening, called here when she came back. Mr Oliver died very suddenly in Forest City, Maine. Fri May 15, 1936 -- We cleaned dining room and china cabinet. Sat May 16, 1936 -- We attended a play at Hall in Fosterville. Laurel took a crowd from town on his truck, and the Ridge also. Sun May 17, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon. Hanford came here for dinner and he and I went to George Gould's for tea and evening. Mon May 18, 1936 -- We churned and washed. It rained in afternoon. Tue May 19, 1936 -- Norman got sheep in barn for shearing, and sheared five. Wed May 20, 1936 -- Finished shearing sheep, had four new lambs come. Thu May 21, 1936 -- Villa began washing kitchen ceiling. Norman killed veal calf. Fri May 22, 1936 -- Laurel took load wood to town, sold it to Mrs Hamilton. I sold her 28 pounds veal & liver, received $2.90. Sat May 23, 1936 -- Cooked and did general housework. S Bracket was here. Sun May 24, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon. I stayed to Bea's for dinner. Lau-rel took us down to woodpile in afternoon, I came home at 3 o'clock. I had Mr & Mrs Ernest Foster and Mrs Evie Peters for supper. Mon May 25, 1936 -- We washed & churned. Jennie & Jean were here for dinner. In p.m. I was sewing and repairing clothes. I paid $5.70 on insurance for one year. Tue May 26, 1936 -- Villa ironed, I washed and repaired summer clothes. Laurel commenced hauling pulp for Grotty Gould. Wed May 27, 1936 -- Villa washed walls in kitchen. I cleaned things in kitchen. Thu May 28, 1936 -- It rained all day. We churned. I printed up 10 pounds butter, churned 12 pounds. Fri May 29, 1936 -- Finished cleaning kitchen. John Flemming called in afternoon to look at veal calves. Sat May 30, 1936 -- Laurel took crowd to Danforth in evening. Sun May 31, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon. Mr Chandler came to preach for summer. Norman went to Mountain. Villa & I did chores. Lizzie Graham was here part of afternoon. Mon Jun 1, 1936 -- Villa & I churned, she washed and I printed 12 pounds butter. Norman went to peel pulp. Tue Jun 2, 1936 -- No entry. Wed Jun 3, 1936 -- Was to Ray Graham's, Dr. Curtis & Myrtle were there, a baby girl was born, Shirley Carmelita. Elmer & Mae Leeman were here in morning. Villa & I cut potatoes, Norman planted. Mr Hitchcock & son & guide went down fishing. Mrs Cowan & Cassie McDonald were here to call, I bought a hat. Thu Jun 4, 1936 -- Began work on dress for Annie. Mr & Mrs Colonel Wagner came that day from Florida. Mon Jun 8, 1936 -- No entry Tue Jun 9, 1936 -- No entry. Wed Jun 10, 1936 -- Mr Chandler came to hold meeting in school house. Villa & I cleaned shed. Frank Way & Gwendoline Boone were married. Thu Jun 11, 1936 -- I did not feel like working, had a bad cold. Fri Jun 12, 1936 -- It rained. Norman churned for us. I printed up 10 pounds butter. Sat Jun 13, 1936 -- I did cooking and worked on dress for myself all day. Sun Jun 14, 1936 -- We had SS in forenoon. Vivian Buckingham was here for dinner & in evening we were calling on Mr & Mrs Ray Graham. Mon Jun 15, 1936 -- We washed. It rained hard all afternoon & night. I finished my dress. Tue Jun 16, 1936 -- I was down to Bea's in afternoon. Wed Jun 17, 1936 -- I went to Danforth on Laurel's truck, attended Helen Wood's graduation in evening. Thu Jun 18, 1936 -- Came from Danforth in George Gould's car. Attended Ladies Aid in vestry. Called at Mrs Veysey's in p.m. Fri Jun 19, 1936 -- We churned and worked most of day. Sat Jun 20, 1936 -- We churned in forenoon. In evening Ray Smith came and took Bea & I to Haynesville to a party at H.F. Smith's. Mrs Ada Giles was stricken with paralysis at Mrs Anna Blanchard's. Sun Jun 21, 1936 -- 40th anniversary of wedding of Mr & Mrs HF Smith. Their children, grand children were all there, also Bea & I, Mr & Mrs OA York & grand child, Howland, ME. Mon Jun 22, 1936 -- We washed in forenoon. Grocery truck came after dinner. I sold him 33 pounds butter. Picked some strawberries for supper. Tue Jun 23, 1936 -- Churned & ironed in forenoon, went strawberrying in afternoon. Wed Jun 24, 1936 -- Bea went to Canterbury on Laurel's truck. I was down to Lizzie Graham's in evening. Thu Jun 25, 1936 -- I was down to Bea's in afternoon. Lizzie Graham & I went over to call on Edith Graham in evening. Fri Jun 26, 1936 -- No entry. Sat Jun 27, 1936 -- The teacher closed school and starts for home Monday morning. Sun Jun 28, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon, rested and read in afternoon, in evening Bea & I and Villa visited with Lizzie Graham. Mon Jun 29, 1936 -- I went down to cemetery on Laurel's truck, placed two geraniums on Will's grave. Tue Jun 30, 1936 -- Churned and went to Libby place to pick strawberries. Villa & I got 4 quarts. John Flemming came and bought veal calf. Wed Jul 1, 1936 -- The third anniversary since Will went away. I went to Fosterville with laurel and had the graves of my parents attended to. Thu Jul 2, 1936 -- We churned to-day, Villa picked strawberries this p.m. They took Mrs Gyles to Portland last night. Mrs Clarence Jarvis called to try to sell me a tombstone. Fri Jul 3, 1936 -- We churned. Villa & I went to Libby place, picked 3 quarts strawberries. Norman finished peeling pulp. Sat Jul 4, 1936 -- Rained all day. Sun Jul 5, 1936 -- We had SS in forenoon. In afternoon Laurel was here and Hanford & Grace, Archie & wife & two children and Bea were here for supper. Mon Jul 6, 1936 -- We washed & churned. Charles & Clark Houghton from Newport made me a call. I was very glad to see them again. Tue Jul 7, 1936 -- Bea, Helen, Annie, Villa & I went to Libby place to pick strawberries. It rained and we did not stay long. Wed Jul 8, 1936 -- Mr Chandler had meeting in school house in evening, and stayed with me all night. Thu Jul 9, 1936 -- Mr Chandler had meeting in school house for children to teach them something about missionaries. Fri Jul 10, 1936 -- We churned. Norman worked on car. Mrs Margaret Marriet, Halifax, & Mrs Arthur Marchant, Waterford NS to stay all night. Sat Jul 11, 1936 -- Norman got the license for the car. Plate #4761. The strangers left in morning. I refused to accept their books. Sun Jul 12, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon, rested after dinner. Bea & Annie came in evening and we were up to Ellis Graham's awhile. Sun Aug 2, 1936 -- Our Baptist church at Forest City was struck by lightening between the hours of 4 and 5 a.m. and was burned to the ground. Mon Aug 3, 1936 -- The boys put poison on the potatoes after dinner. Went to dance at night. I paid Clarence Buckingham $2.00 I made a dress for Helen. Tue Aug 4, 1936 -- We churned and Villa ironed while I took care of butter and did lots of other things. Wed Aug 5, 1936 -- Sold a veal calf to Neil Donovan, $6. Thu Aug 6, 1936 -- Had John Flem-ming for dinner. I sent $5 to WE Porter to finish paying insurance premium. We were down to Ladies Aid. Met at GH Clark's. Fri Aug 7, 1936 -- Cooked in forenoon. In afternoon worked on dress. Villa picked 3 quarts raspberries. Norman picked 2 1/2 quarts. Sat Aug 8, 1936 -- I cooked bread, beans, cookies, cake, 2 pies, roasted beef, sterilized 1 pint can, printed 10 pounds butter, washed 2 back & companions of three chairs and put back on. Sun Aug 9, 1936 -- Had SS in forenoon, I stayed to Bea's for dinner. In p.m. went to Fosterville in truck to church and Sand Beach for a little while. Mon Aug 10, 1936 -- Commenced haying at Higgs'. Norman found battery run down, took car down to Higgs and could not get it back. Came back and plowed in rain all afternoon. Laurel was here for dinner and took me down with truck, the roads were icy. Mon Dec 14, 1936 -- I sent for SS supplies and money to get my watch from p.o. It came from Danforth CoD. Davis had repaired it. Glad to get it home again. Tue Dec 15, 1936 -- I went up to Graham's and got my watch. Ellis brought it from town. Carlson had trouble getting up hill with his car on account of ice. Wed Dec 16, 1936 -- I got order from Eaton's with mail on Tuesday, got record "The rescue from Moose River Cold Mine." Thu Dec 17, 1936 -- I was knitting on gloves. The boys were working at pulp. Wrong. It rained. They had program at school house, roads were slippery. I had to walk bank across ditch. Laurel took me to town, got kerosine, 5 1/2 gal. He took all who wanted to go to Mountain to school concert evening. Fri Dec 18, 1936 -- No entry. Sat Dec 19, 1936 -- I cooked in forenoon, the boys finished yarding pulp. Laurel brought home a new radio for the family to enjoy. Sun Dec 20, 1936 -- It rained all day. I have been in the house all day. The snow is nearly gone. I have got ready 8 cards and 2 letters. Mon Dec 21, 1936 -- Norman, John, Bea & I went to Houlton in afternoon, traveled through stores all afternoon. Came home about 9 o'clock. Tue Dec 22, 1936 -- We churned. Villa ironed. I worked over butter, cooked some. Wed Dec 23, 1936 -- I sold 70 pounds cow hide to Max Rose at 5 cents per pound, $3.50 Thu Dec 24, 1936 -- I cooked some in forenoon. Laurel was here for dinner. Carl & I went to town in p.m. I called on George & Josie & Mrs Blanchard. Fri Dec 25, 1936 -- I went down to Bea's in evening of 24th and stayed until nine Christmas night. Bea & I and Annie trimmed tree, the others went to Houlton. Sat Dec 26, 1936 -- Just working around and getting over Christmas. I had to cook bread and I cooked two chickens. Roads were very slippery. Tue Dec 29, 1936 -- Norman went to Woodstock after tugs for harness which he broke yarding wood yesterday afternoon. Wed Dec 30, 1936 -- Boys worked all day at hardwood. Clarence took team out to Elias Foster's to get shod. Wes & Luella Buckingham were here for dinner. Luella stayed the afternoon, then went down to Higgs' to stay the night, listen to the radio and watch the old year out. I have much to be thankful for in year just past. Fri Jan 1, 1937 -- I cooked in forenoon. In afternoon, Lizzie Graham & I went out making New Year calls. We called on Mrs Guy Leeman, Mrs Don Boone and stayed an hour or more with Bea Higgs. Sat Jan 2, 1937 -- I am not going to crowd 5 years into this little book. I have gone through one year writing on that small space but it did not seem enough. [That probably explains the gaps in Sarah Anne's diaries] We churned in forenoon and I cooked in p.m. Carl took Bea & Lizzie H & I down town. We called on Mrs Brooks, Mrs Fred Foster, Anna Blanchard and at George Gould's. Sun Jan 3, 1937 -- Another rain Sunday, we stayed in house all day. Norman went somewhere this afternoon. I rested and read. Villa rested and did some chores. Clarence came back about five and Carl was with us for supper. Mon Jan 4, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon, I went down to Harvey's in afternoon and embroidered pattern on pillow case. The boys worked putting handles in axes and other chores and did not go to woods to work until after dinner. Tue Jan 5, 1937 -- In afternoon I began to work on quilt called "falling leaves", taken from Family Herald. The first work of the kind I ever did. |

Wed Jan 6, 1937 -- Did house work, cooked bread and beans, etc., and worked on quilt. Thu Jan 7, 1937 -- Bea came up for dinner, she knit on sweater all afternoon. I worked on quilt some of the time. Fri Jan 8, 1937 -- I cooked cookies in forenoon. Lizzie Graham came and wanted me to go over to Ray Graham's with her. We went and had dinner and visited the afternoon with Arlene. Heard that Adam McPherson and his sister Mary died that day in Hartin Settlement. Sat Jan 9, 1937 -- We cooked and cleaned as usual on Sat. The boys went to work but it began to rain and they came home about ten o'clock. George Fox got hurt in the woods working for Clark, a limb came down and struck him on the head. He got Norman to take him to Danforth to the Dr. He was not seriously hurt. Sun Jan 10, 1937 -- We had fine day, a little cooler than we have been having. We arose about eight. I rested and studied my SS lesson in forenoon, was hoping some of them would be over from Haynesville. Had SS in afternoon, attendance 22. Was in to Bea's awhile before SS. Ray Graham was here awhile after SS. Mon Jan 11, 1937 -- We washed and I worked on my quilt. The boys worked in woods all day. Wright the lumber man let most of his crew go, he stopped yarding. Tue Jan 12, 1937 -- I went down to Harvey's in afternoon and borrowed her embroidery hoops. She had her rug nearly finished. Wed Jan 13, 1937 -- We churned in forenoon, had 7 pounds butter in afternoon. I went down to Bea's, Mrs Elias Foster was there visiting. Elias went to town and back about three o'clock. Thu Jan 14, 1937 -- The boys went to work in morning. It rained and they came back before dinner. Joe Meltz from Woodstock and a young Keilty from Canterbury were here for dinner. It rained hard all afternoon. Fri Jan 15, 1937 -- It rained all day. The boys worked on car most of the day. Went down to Higgs' in afternoon. Went down in evening to listen to radio. Sat Jan 16, 1937 -- It cleared, froze some in the night and the boys worked all day. Laurel was here in afternoon and I signed a note for the bank and he went down where the boys were working. Vivian Buckingham came down to Bea's. Sun Jan 17, 1937 -- I went to Higgs' in forenoon and hear as fine sermon from Fredericton preached by JW Bartlett of United church of Canada, subject: faces. Had SS in afternoon. Norman took Vivian and Hollis Wood out home after SS. Mon Jan 18, 1937 -- It rained in forenoon, the boys id not go to work. Laurel went to town with truck, I went with him and Carl also. I got two parcels, one from Natick and a small order from Sears & Roebuck. Tue Jan 19, 1937 -- I worked on quilt a while. Bea was here in afternoon, in evening Norman had to go to town I went down and called on George & Josie. Wed Jan 20, 1937 -- Villa ironed, I cooked a pie and cut out three gingham aprons, 2 for Villa and one for myself. Mrs Harvey was here awhile in afternoon. Carl was here in evening. Norman finished yarding hardwood. Thu Jan 21, 1937 -- I cooked some in forenoon. It stormed, the boys did not go to work. Norman went to town in p.m. for gasoline. Bea went with him, I worked on quilt making block with wild cherries in it. Norman came back from town and took sawing machine down to pulp site. Fri Jan 22, 1937 -- Norman was sawing pulp today. I went down to Bea's in forenoon and stayed until about four. Fixed a dress for Helen. Sat Jan 23, 1937 -- Norman finished sawing pulp and moved the saw home. I cooked and did usual Sat work. Villa scrubbed and did chores as usual. I got an order from Eaton's, Villa and I both got new shoes. Sun Jan 24, 1937 -- A fine day and good roads and as I had heard, Evie was not very well and I wanted to know how she was. We took a trip to Haynesville, Norman, Bea, Helen, Annie & I. Snow had covered the ice on the road and prevented it from being slippery so the going was good. Evie was not very well, but they don't seem to know what ails her. Helen came home from Michigan Saturday. Mon Jan 25, 1937 -- It was storm and the boys did not go to work. In p.m. looked up a chance to cut cordwood. We churned in forenoon, in afternoon I worked on quilt. Tue Jan 26, 1937 -- Villa washed, I mended, in afternoon I worked awhile on quilt. Edith Graham and Lizzie Graham were here for an hour or more. Wed Jan 27, 1937 -- Villa ironed. I cooked come and did other work. Don Boone had one horse working yarding pulp. Thu Jan 28, 1937 -- Don Boone had the team all day. When he took team after dinner, I rode down to Bea's on bob-sled and stayed afternoon with her. Fri Jan 29, 1937 -- Norman took team and hauled pulp to main road. Sat Jan 30, 1937 -- Norman was yarding pulp, Clarence cut cord wood. Sun Jan 31, 1937 -- I was home all forenoon. Clarence B was here. We went to SS in afternoon. Lizzie Graham and I stayed to Bea's for supper and to hear the radio, heard parts of two sermons. Came home about 8:30 p.m. Mon Feb 1, 1937 -- It was stormy and the men did not go to work. It snowed in night. Tue Feb 2, 1937 -- Norman was hauling pulp, Clarence cutting cord wood. We washed and & worked on quilt in afternoon. Wed Feb 3, 1937 -- Norman hauling pulp and Clarence cutting cordwood. Villa started to iron but clothes were too wet. I cooked bread, cookies, beans and cake, worked on quilt in p.m. Thu Feb 4, 1937 -- I took work and went to Harvey's calling for 2 hours. Bea came and after our visit there she came up here. I did some repairing on dress for her, she stayed for supper and the evening. The young folkds were all here in the evening. Fri Feb 5, 1937 -- Norman and Clarence were swamping road to haul out hardwood to be sawed for slab wood. Villa & I were alone here all day. I started to make an apron, did not get it finished. Sat Feb 6, 1937 -- I cooked in forenoon and went to Jennie's on an errand in afternoon. Finished apron. Norman hauled pulp. Clarence Buckingham fin-ished working here. [He] boarded here 12 weeks. Sun Feb 7, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's for dinner and to listen to sermon from the Brunswick St. Baptist church by Rev Marshall. Had dinner and ice cream. Laurel started away to his work around 2 o'clock. Charlie Lewin was there for dinner & Norman. Mon Feb 8, 1937 -- Bea's birthday, I had her and some other women invited for the afternoon and evening. We had pleasant afternoon together. Norman laid up with a boil. Tue Feb 9, 1937 -- John hauled pulp with Norman. Lots of folks taking colds. Wed Feb 10, 1937 -- No entry. Thu Feb 11, 1937 -- I called at Harvey's. The children were all sick in bed with cold. Mrs Harvey and Alice were around, Mrs Harvey was not very well. I went to Bea's, Carl & Helen were home from school with colds. Bea was working on quilt. Fri Feb 12, 1937 -- I was to Bea's in p.m. helping her some on quilt, called on Mrs Don Boone. Laurel got his finger jammed while putting load of lumber on truck, went to Woodstock hospital, had finger taken off at middle joint. Sat Feb 13, 1937 -- I went to town with Norman in evening, after that the boys went out to Mountain to a party. Heard about Laurel hurting his finger. Sun Feb 14, 1937 -- Sunday, a stormy day. We had no SS. I went down to Graham's and tried to get through to Canterbury to find out how bad Laurel was hurt. Something matter with the line, couldn't telephone through. Laurel was in hospital in Woodstock. Norman laid up with a bad cold. Mon Feb 15,1937 -- Laurel got out of hospital and drove his car home that night. It stormed in afternoon. Tue Feb 16, 1937 -- Laurel, Bea and children came up in truck in afternoon, he was feeling pretty well, but half the fore finger on his left hand is gone. Wed Feb 17, 1937 -- Laurel went back to Canterbury, left truck over there for someone else to drive. Thu Feb 18, 1937 -- Norman commenced to haul hardwood out in John's field. Not feeling very well, but working. Fri Feb 19, 1937 -- John had to go to town to get horses shod, so Bea & I went down with him. They had circle a day late so we attended Circle. Helped bind a quilt and had dinner at Mrs Blanchard's. Sat Feb 20, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Feb 21, 1937 -- We had SS in afternoon, attendance 15. Bea came up with me in afternoon and read a letter I had received from Addie Graham. Mon Feb 22, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. I went down to Bea's in forenoon. In afternoon, Bea & I, Lizzie Harvey and Etta, Jennie Graham and Hazel Boone went out to see Mildred Patterson at camp in woods at Burnt Knoll. Tue Feb 23, 1937 -- Villa ironed, I did general housework. Wed Feb 24, 1937 -- Lizzie Graham and Lizzie Harvey were here in afternoon. We talked of going to Clark's camp, a fine warm day. We gathered in 10 eggs. The young folks went to Clark's camp in evening. Thu Feb 25, 1937 -- It stormed all day, we did not get away to the camp. We missed it we did not go yesterday. Fri Feb 26, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's in forenoon. We decided not to go to the camp. I stayed and helped her get apples for mince meat and came home about four p.m. Luella Buckingham went to Woodstock hospital to be operated on for appendicitis. Sat Feb 27, 1937 -- Did usual work for Saturday, I cooked in forenoon. The girls were in afternoon for the mail. Annie walked to town with other girls and boys. Sun Feb 28, 1937 -- We had Ss in p.m. with attendance of 15. Was in to Bea's before Ss and Lizzie Harvey & I were in awhile after SS. Mon Mar 1, 1937 -- A fine day but quite cold. We washed and I worked on my quilt. Falling Leaves. Norman was hauling hardwood. Tue Mar 2, 1937 -- Villa ironed, I visited with Lizzie Graham most of the day until 4 o'clock. Bea went out to Buckingham's with the mail. Luella doing well in hospital. Wed Mar 3, 1937 -- Arlen Graham and two children were over here visiting and had dinner with me, stayed until about four o'clock. Thu Mar 4, 1937 -- Laurel broke his trailer and came home. His finger is healed but quite tender. I was down to Bea's in afternoon and made slip for Helen. Fri Mar 5, 1937 -- Bea & I, Hazel Boone and Lizzie Harvey walked in to Herb Clark's camp in afternoon and back before supper and were not very tired. Sat Mar 6, 1937 -- I cooked in forenoon and kept busy at different things. Some of the girls were in afternoon. Margaret Gaskin came down to Bea's for weekend. Sun Mar 14, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's in forenoon to hear the sermon on radio. In afternoon, Hanford came and brought Lester and Leah and their youngest boy. Hanford came up here for dinner. Lester and Leah stayed to Bea's. We had no SS. Mon Mar 15, 1937 -- Ida Farrell was here visiting. I had a cold and coujld not speak out loud. Clarence B brought her down. It stormed and they stayed all night. Grotty Gould & Charlie Fish came to board at Higgs to haul out from Mosquito Brook to main road. Tue Mar 16, 1937 -- Villa ironed, I worked on Falling Leaf quilt. Wed Mar 17, 1937 -- No entry. Thu Mar 18, 1937 -- No entry. Fri Mar 19, 1937 -- No entry. Sat Mar 20, 1937 -- We went out to Mountain to concert in school house in evening. Norman took the older ones in car, the younger ones walked and got a ride back as far as camp on a truck. Thu Mar 25, 1937 -- I finished putting quilt together. Fri Mar 26, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's in afternoon to listen to birthday period on radio, it was Helen's birthday and her name was called by greetings sent in by her mother and dad and sister Annie. She got a new dress and I had to shorten it for her. Sat Mar 27, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Mar 28, 1937 -- Norman & I were down to Bea's for dinner. It was Easter Sunday. Herbert Howe was there and we had ice cream. Had SS in afternoon with 18 present. Mon Mar 29, 1937 -- We all went out to Wes Buckingham's on double team in afternoon, had not seen Luella since she came from hospital and as there was no school, the children went. Laurel brought gasoline from Orient for Norman to begin sawing wood. We called on Elias Foster & family. Tue Mar 30, 1937 -- Clarence Buck-ingham came here in evening to commence work for Norman. Wed Mar 31, 1937 -- The men sawed wood at John Higgs. Carl went to town with dog and brought up a bag of sugar and a letter for me from Josephine Gould, Muncie. Thu Apr 1, 1937 -- They finished up sawing wood at Higgs'. Charlie Boone died in hospital in St. John at one a.m. They brought him to his home at Forest City, arrived some time in night. Fri Apr 2, 1937 -- I went down the road in morning, called at Lizzie Gra-ham's and went on to Bea's. Lizzie told me when coming home funeral would be at 1:30 o'clock Saturday after-noon. Sat Apr 3, 1937 -- I cooked in forenoon. In afternoon, Laurel took truck and took a crowd from Mountain down to funeral and poor Charlie was laid to rest in cemetery at Forest City. Sun Apr 4, 1937 -- Bea & Annie were up here for dinner. After dinner I went down with them to listen awhile on radio, it was no good. We went to SS there were 16 present. Mon Apr 5, 1937 -- The boys finished sawing wood at Everett Graham's and moved the machine down to Norman's wood pile. Tue Apr 6, 1937 -- It rained. Laurel was here for dinner. The boys went to town with truck. I commenced piecing a quilt cover. Clarence B been boarding here one week. Wed Apr 7, 1937 -- The boys worked at sawing wood. I worked on quilt. Villa cleaned cupboard. Thu Apr 8, 1937 -- No entry. Fri Apr 9, 1937 -- I had cold, did not feel very well. Laurel was up in evening. I endorsed a note for fifty dol-lars on bank. Sat Apr 10, 1937 -- The boys still working sawing wood. Sun Apr 11, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's and listened to sermon by Rev Telford in St. Paul's United church in Fredericton. Went to SS in afternoon. Our collection was 99 cents to send to missionaries. They had a sing to Higgs in evening. The oldest white cow freshened. Mon Apr 12, 1937 -- No entry. Tue Apr 13, 1937 -- No entry. Wed Apr 14, 1937 -- Had pie sale in school house in evening, also sold fudge. Took in $13.10. Thu Apr 15, 1937 -- Bea and Lizzie Graham was here in afternoon. Mon Apr 19, 1937 -- The boys finished sawing Norman's hard wood at noon and moved to Fred Graham's in afternoon. Wed Apr 21, 1937 -- I went down to Bea's in forenoon, fixed dresses for Helen, came home before supper. Thu Apr 22, 1937 -- The boys moved sawing machine to L Harvey's. It began snowing in evening. Fri Apr 23, 1937 -- Still snowing when we got up in morning, a lot of snow on ground. The boys did not go to work sawing wood. Clarence Buckingham made me a set of quilt frames, Gordon Harvey helped him. Lizzie & Ethel Graham were here in evening, also a crowd of youngsters playing graphophone. Black and white cow freshened down in field. Sat Apr 24, 1937 -- I got goods to finish two quilts, fixed a dress for Annie in afternoon. Sun Apr 25, 1937 -- Bea, Helen & Annie were here for dinner. Norman & Clarence drove out to Mountain with team. We had SS in p.m. Mon Apr 26, 1937 -- to Fri Apr 30, 1937 -- No entry. Sat May 1, 1937 -- The children were around hanging May baskets. They brought me a very pretty one from Helen and Annie. Sun May 2, 1937 -- We had SS in morning, there were 19 present. We made the change from afternoon to morning for the summer. Mon May 3, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. I washed and ironed curtains for windows in my room and hall and did various other things. Laurel Higgs and Ida Spinney were married in Amity, Maine by Mrs Cora Bubar. Tue May 4, 1937 -- Churned and made up butter in prints. Ironed and did various other things. Wed May 5, 1937 -- Norman took car to town in evening. I went down visiting, Bea & Carl went down on business. I stayed down all night. Villa & I cleaned my room, filled bed tick and put every thing back and changed bed and got everything ready before going visiting. Thu May 6, 1937 -- I went to Ladies Aid with Josie, we quilted on quilt all day. It was my birthday. I stayed with Anna for supper. George & Josie & I went to cemetery in evening and removed boughs from Will's grave. I stayed with Gould's for the night. Fri May 7, 1937 -- Josie & I took a walk in morning up across the dam and down through the grove, called on Agnes Brooks. Mrs Oliver had just arrived from Mass. to spend the summer in Forest City. We came back for dinner and in afternoon George took us to Elmer Leeman's and we called there and to Guy Cropley's. Norman came after me in evening. Clarence B finished work here. Sat May 8, 1937 -- Hanford Gould and Mr Cowan were here for supper. I sold 26 pounds butter. Bea and Annie stayed with me all night Friday night and were here for breakfast in morning. We all enjoyed it very much. Clarence B boarded here from Mar 30 to May 7, 5 1/2 weeks. Sun May 9, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. In afternoon Bea came up. We went up to Jennie's calling. Word came that Laurel was married and they wanted Ray Graham to bring out a crowd to give him a shivaree. Ray took a crowd of the younger ones out in his truck, got stuck in the mud coming back, about half way through the woods and they all had to walk home. Lizzie Graham and Lizzie Harvey were here in evening. Mon May 10, 1937 -- It rained. We kept busy most of the day. Tue May 11, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. In afternoon we churned and printed up butter and got ready to attend coronation by radio. Wed May 12, 1937 -- Coronation day. We had breakfast over and about 6:30 Laurel came up after me. It was coming in good and they didn't want me to miss it. I was there in time to hear them come into the Abbey and we heard the whole coronation ceremony. We listened until nearly 10 o'clock p.m. Josie Gould, Florence Cropley, Hazel Boone, Lizzie Harvey, Jennie Graham and I and some children and men during the day. The crowd went to Canterbury to dance in evening. Thu May 13, 1937 -- Bea & I went down town in afternoon with Laurel and attended Ladies Aid. I sent an order to Eaton's from American office. Bea sent her coat back to exchange. Norman worked one day on road. Fri May 14, 1937 -- We cleaned hall upstairs and down and closet under the stairs. Norman was splitting wood. Sat May 15, 1937 -- I cooked bread, beans, cake, cookies, etc. Norman was splitting wood. Laurel was hauling wood to Station, went out to Mountain in evening and brought his wife home. Sun May 16, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. In afternoon the young people all went walking and were in here for awhile. Laurel & wife were here for supper. In evening, Carl brought Bea and the others up in truck. Mon May 17, 1937 -- We washed & churned and printed up 10 pounds butter. I started in to applique crocuses on a curtain for desk. Norman began repairing fence. Tue May 18, 1937 -- We ironed with other work. Lizzie Graham was here awhile in afternoon. Norman was working on pasture fence. Wed May 19, 1937 -- I worked on my desk curtain. Villa was mending holes in quilt. Norman finished fixing fence. Bea & Annie were here in evening. Thu May 20, 1937 -- Carl's birthday and I have not given him a a present, the first time since he was born, I think. 16 today. It rained hard all day. Norman sheared the sheep. Fri May 21, 1937 -- Lizzie Graham and I were calling on Flora Leeman and Hazel Boone. Mr Armstrong was on the Ridge on business. Sat May 22, 1937 -- We did the usual Sat work. Norman rigged up sawing machine and he and Carl sawed up pulp ends in door yard for wood. Laurel & Ida went to Debec for weekend. Helen went with them as far as Hazen Collier's to visit Mary. Ida stayed up to visit her sister and Helen and Margaret Gaskin came back with Laurel Sunday. Sun May 23, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon, in evening Carl took Bea and I and Helen and Margaret Gaskin down to meeting. We called to George Gould's, Ollie, Marjorie and a Mr & Mrs Cunningham from St. John were there. We we started to come home, our car wouldn't go and we had to get George Gould to bring us home. Luella Buckingham was here for dinner. Mon May 24, 1937 -- We washed and churned and got word we could go to Woodstock Tuesday on truck. Tue May 25, 1937 -- Laurel had to take truck to Woodstock to get fixed. Bea & John and Norman, Margaret Gaskin and Herb Clark went from here and Wilmot and Wes Buckingham went from Mountain. We had the day in town, he did not get truck fixed until six o'clock. Bea & I had supper at Nettie Moorhouse's. Had a big load back and ten men came down to work for Clark. We brought Ida home from Debec, all on the truck. Wed May 26, 1937 -- Norman was harrowing. I went down to Bea's in morning, came back on John's team, he was going to work on the road. I put quilt in frames. Mr Willard Leeman died at Forest City in the early hours of the morning at the home of his son Elmer. John Flemming called. I sold my wool. Laurel brought casket from Canterbury in evening. Thu May 27, 1937 -- Was down to Mr Leeman's funeral. Bea & I went with laurel when he took a load to Station. There were a large number of friends and relatives to funeral. Fri May 28, 1937 -- I had quilting. Edith Graham, Lizzie Harvey and Bea were here and quilted before dinner and Ida came after dinner. They were all here for supper and Laurel with us too. Did not finish quilt. Sat May 29, 1937 -- I quilted in afternoon. Sun May 30, 1937 -- We had SS in a.m., had 4 strangers from Clark's camp present. I came back home before dinner. Was up to Jennie's awhile in p.m. Bea was up here in evening. Mon May 31, 1937 -- We did washing and churning in forenoon. In afternoon, I quilted. Tue Jun 1, 1937 -- I was up to Jennie's on an errand in morning. Lizzie Graham came in forenoon to help with quilt. In afternoon, Bea and Lizzie Harvey and Ida Higgs came and we got quilt out of frames. I got two pigs from Ray Graham. Wed Jun 2, 1937 -- Bound up the quilt around the edges and got it finished, ready to give to Laurel & Ida for wedding present. Thu Jun 3, 1937 -- I planted cucumbers, beetrs, carrots, turnips & cabbage seeds in morning, went down to cemetery with Laurel when he went with his second load to Station. Set out geraniums, then went down to Ladies Aid. Was to Myrtle Boone's for supper, came up with Laurel. Was home awhile then went down to Higgs' to a shower they were having for Laurel who got married recently. Fri Jun 4, 1937 -- It rained and soaked the ground again. We churned and printed up 10 pounds butter. Two hens finished hatching out 21 chickens and I put them all with one hen. Sat Jun 5, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Jun 6, 1937 -- We had SS in morning, in afternoon Lizzie Harvey called and later Ray & Arlene. Lewis called with Mrs Lewis and they brought John & Bea and when they left here went out to camp to take pictures and later George & Josie called a few minutes. Mon Jun 7, 1937 -- Laurel went to Woodstock to get load for Clark, I sent 25 pounds putter to get groceries. The Red Truck came through later in day for first time this year. We washed & churned, cut seed potatoes. Norman got ground ready to plant. Tue Jun 8, 1937 -- Villa ironed, I worked at other things. Didn't feel very well. Norman was planting potatoes, had trouble with horse hoe. Wed Jun 9, 1937 -- Norman fixed hoe and finished planting potatoes. I went down to Bea's visiting, she was papering her bedroom. I helped her some. I called at Don Boone's to see Mrs Howe who was visiting there. I set out twenty tomato plants in morning, Jennie brought them to me. Frank Way moved to Canterbury. Sun Jun 13, 1937 -- Had SS in morning. Bea came up here for dinner in afternoon, she and I went over to Ray Graham's calling. Guy and Florence were here in evening. Mon Jun 14, 1937 -- Laurel came in morning said he could go to haul sand to cemetery at Fosterville to put on the Maxan graves, his wife & I went with him. We leveled it all up with sand. John Flemming was here for dinner. I sold him 3 two year olds and two veal calves. Bea, Ida & I went to town with Laurel in p.m. When we got back Bea & I went to work on dress for Annie, I cut it out and she sewed. We got it together. Tue Jun 15, 1937 -- We churned, I took care of butter and cleaned churn things. Villa ironed. In afternoon, we printed up 11 pounds butter and I finished Annie's dress. Wed Jun 16, 1937 -- I washed coverings of the cushions of 3 chairs. WE swept and cleaned some in barn. In evening was down to pie sale in school house. Thu Jun 17, 1937 -- I put clean coverings back on chair cushions. Had a number of callers in afternoon. Eldon Gould came in forenoon. Fri Jun 18, 1937 -- We churned in forenoon. Norman started to work on road but it began to rain and they did not go to work on road. Eldon went away after setting out some rhubarb. Sat Jun 19, 1937 -- No entry. Fri Jul 9, 1937 -- Bea & I went to Houlton on Laurel's truck, spent the day looking through stores to find a dress for each of us. About 4 o'clock we went to Annie McPherson's, spent about an hour thre when Laurel came after us. I bought a dress for myself and one for Villa. Sat Jul 10, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Jul 11, 1937 -- No entry. Mon Jul 12, 1937 -- In evening as I was getting ready for bed, my sister Evie came into my room. Ora & Sylvia and baby and Olive Smith came from Haynesville, the first time I had seen any of them this year. Evie stayed all night and the others went home later in evening. Tue Jul 13, 1937 -- They were celebrating the twelfth at Fosterville. It rained in forenoon. In afternoon, Evie & I got a chance to go to Fosterville in Mr Durgin's car. Saw old friends. Evie went from there home about 6 o'clock. I stayed until the truck came home at 10:30 p.m. Wed Jul 14, 1937 -- No entry. Thu Jul 15, 1937 -- No entry. Fri Jul 16, 1937 -- No entry. Sat Jul 17, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Jul 18, 1937 -- Laurel took a truck load to Eel River church to a Pentecostal meeting in evening. There was a large crowd and the minister spoke well. We had SS in morning and a number were there from Clark's camp. I stayed to Bea's for dinner. Mon Jul 19, 1937 -- to Sat Jul 24, 1937 -- No entry. Sun Jul 25, 1937 -- Had SS in forenoon. In afternoon Laurel took a crowd to Sand Beach. I met a cousin, William McDougall, for the first time. He had a cottage up there and was staying for a week with his family. Mon Jul 26, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. I put a quilt in frames in afternoon. Tue Jul 27, 1937 -- A crowd of sports from Fosterville went to Logan. William McDougall was here with them and gave me a call. Wed Jul 28, 1937 -- Quilted on quilt in spare time and invited the women to quilting for Friday. Ed Segee came to help Norman hay. Thu Jul 29, 1937 -- Went to town with Laurel in forenoon, called at Josie's and invited her to quilting, told her to bring any friend she might wish to quilting. Came home and cooked and got ready for quilting party. Fri Jul 30, 1937 -- I had a crowd quilting on Falling Leaves quilt. There were present: Bea, Hazel Boone, Lizzie Graham, Lizzie & Etta Harvey, Arlene Graham and children, Florence & Rita Cropley, Anna Blanchard, Josie Gould, Mrs Lewis, Mrs Veysey and Myrtle Boone. Got a lot done on quilt but not finished. Sat Jul 31, 1937 -- I did not have much work to do so worked on quilt most of the day, then stood it up against the wall to stay over the Sabbath day. Sun Aug 1, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. Vivian and Melvin Buckingham came down to Bea's for dinner. Bea and Vivian came up here in afternoon. Vivian and I went over to Everett Graham's to call, found him very sick. The Dr. Came and said he had TB. Mon Aug 2, 1937 -- Bea and Etta Harvey helped me in afternoon and we got quilt done all but binding. Lizzie Graham was in awhile in afternoon. Tue Aug 3, 1937 -- to Fri Aug 13, 1937 -- No entry. Sat Aug 14, 1937 -- Laurel, Ida & I went to Woodstock in evening and I bought a new bed for myself. I was painting woodwork in kitchen, Carl came in afternoon and helped me and we finished woodwork and dining room. Sun Aug 15, 1937 -- We had SS in a.m. Rev Kirkpatrick had meeting in school house in p.m. and went out to Mountain to hold another meeting at 3 o'clock and in evening, went on to North Lake to hold meting. I went out to Mountain service in George Gould's car. Everett Gould brought his wife & mother and Sadie Could over here. Sadie stayed but went down to George Gould's to visit a few days first. Mon Aug 16, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. I papered dining room and did all I could getting ready for Sadie's visit and thinking of the Gould reunion. Tue Aug 17, 1937 -- We churned. It was a hot day. I printed up butter in evening, I just finished when George & Josie came and brought Sadie up to make me a visit. Wed Aug 18, 1937 -- We talked and cooked some. Bea was here in after-noon. Thu Aug 19, 1937 -- Sadie & I were down to Bea's in afternoon and stayed to supper and until late in even-ing. Fri Aug 20, 1937 -- I was cooking and getting read for the Gould reunion. Charles Gould & wife and Mabel were here in afternoon. I gave Charles new note for $1. Sat Aug 21, 1937 -- We had the Gould reunion at Fosterville Sand Beach, there were 91 Gould relatives there and 14 visitors, had dinner and supper on the grounds and an interesting program in afternoon. Sun Aug 22, 1937 -- Had SS in afternoon, we went out to Mountain to meeting. Hanford & Leah came after meeting, were here for supper and I went back with them to make a visit. We got over there in time to attend service in the Baptist church and then went to hear Bubar where he was preaching in a tent. Mon Aug 23, 1937 -- Grace & I remained home in forenoon, in afternoon we were down town. I bought a pair of shoes for myself. Tue Aug 24, 1937 -- I attended the Golden wedding of Thomas & Ida Howe. I met some old friends whom I had not met for years and whom I knew when were all young people together at North Lake. Wed Aug 25, 1937 -- I had dinner with Mrs Ernest Foster and Evie Peters, we had a fine time together. Vanch & I called on Sanford Varney and wife and Grace came and got me and we went out to Fred Gould's for an hour or more. Thu Aug 26, 1937 -- In the afternoon, Grace took me over to Herb Smith's in Haynesville. Leah, Phyllis & baby and Marjorie went along for the ride. Evie was up to Sunset Park to a Baptist field day. I went down to village in evening with Ora & Sylvia. Fri Aug 27, 1937 -- I stayed and visited with Herb & Evie. Marvin came home from woods, he was not feeling very well. Ora & Sylvia was there awhile in evening. Sat Aug 28, 1937 -- We stayed home and Evie and Olive worked in forenoon. In afternoon Sylvia came for us and took us to to where they live for tea. Sun Aug 29, 1937 -- Evie and I were down to river in forenoon, rested in p.m. A very hot day. In evening, Ora & Sylvia and Maurice & Olive brought me home. Wed Sep 1, 1937 -- No entry. Thu Sep 2, 1937 -- I got a chance to go to Selden to SS rally with George & Josie and Mrs Blanchard in George Gould's car. Norman & I stayed down to Higgs' to dinner, came home about 4 o'clock. George & Josie Gould were here for supper. Mon Sep 13, 1937 -- A tractor went by before daylight going to Logan. Flemming came in afternoon and brought bull calf. Villa & I churned, printed up 12 pounds butter & picked tomatoes. Tue Sep 14, 1937 -- A rainy morning. I went to Canterbury with Mr Frank Cliff on truck, took over 49 pounds butter to Donovan's, got bag of flour, 20 pounds lard and other small groceries. Eldon came back with us from Mountain. Wed Sep 15, 1937 -- Bea & I and Lizzie Harvey went out to Nina Wood's to knitting bee and wood splitting. There were forty there for dinner, they got the wood split and quite a lot of knitting done. Thu Sep 16, 1937 -- I made 3 quarts tomato pickles in forenoon, cooked 2 pumpkin pies and some cakes in patty pans in afternoon. Cut up pail of green tomatoes for pickles and canned 7 pints of ripe tomatoes. Fri Sep 17, 1937 -- Churned and printed up butter and put up 8 quarts of apple & cranberry preserves. Sat Sep 18, 1937 -- Did usual Saturday work, the girls were calling in afternoon. Sun Sep 19, 1937 -- We had SS. In afternoon, Laurel took a crowd down to Logan to see the works down there. They have a scow and a large boat under construction. Mon Sep 20, 1937 -- We washed. Norman went to town at noon. I went down and sent orders for SS supplies and orders to Henry N. Clark for lining for stove. Norman began sawing his wood in afternoon. Tue Sep 21, 1937 -- We churned in forenoon, Norman was sawing wood, had 4 extra men here for dinner. I dressed hen in morning. Mrs Drost came here to stay until they get camps ready for her to go down lake cooking. Her husband stays here nights. Wed Sep 22, 1937 -- I dressed chicken for dinner. We were down to Mrs Harvey's calling in afternoon, Mrs Drost & I. Thu Sep 23, 1937 -- Mrs Drost, Lizzie Harvey, Bea & I were down to parson-age to Ladies Aid and quilted awhile in afternoon. Fri Sep 24, 1937 -- Villa & I picked and packed wool to sent to mill. Mrs Drost went down to camp where her husband was working. Sat Sep 25, 1937 -- We churned and made 11 pounds butter. Sun Oct 3, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. I came home and just as we were about to have dinner, Osbourn & Myrtle York & grand daughter from Howland drove into the yard. They came to see us and took Bea and I back with them for a week's visit. We started for Howland about 4 o'clock. We had a lovely drive down and had supper and went to meeting in evening. Mon Oct 4, 1937 -- Bea & I in Howland. Spent the day visiting with Myrtle and met Miss Fry, a lady who was around soliciting for the orphan children of Maine. We went to Baptist church in evening where they were holding special meetings. Tue Oct 5, 1937 -- In afternoon when Osbourn got done work, he drove Bea & I and Gail to cemetery where sister Mary has lain for many years. Bea & Mrs Fry went to church in evening, I stayed home with Myrtle & Gail. Wed Oct 6, 1937 -- Mrs York, Gail, Bea & I went to movie pictures in evening. A very interesting picture of Irish history where Parnell was leader of the Irish Party. Thu Oct 7, 1937 -- After Osbourn got done work he took us down to East Holden to visit their married daughters, Hazel Hoyt and May Larkin. Fri Oct 8, 1937 -- Bea was knitting and I was crocheting lace for pastime during the week making trips down town to the stores, in the evening we went to church. Sat Oct 9, 1937 -- While Myrtle was giving music lessons in forenoon, Bea & I went out walking over town and across bridge to the grocery store. In afternoon, called on Mrs Reynolds, Osborn's mother. In evening Osborn took us over the pulp & paper mill. Sun Oct 10, 1937 -- In morning we started for home, Osborn & Myrtle & Gail bringing Bea & I. Home came by the way of Lincoln, Mattawamkeg, Wytopitlock, Bancroft, Weston, Orient, and then crossed the line into Canada & home. Stopped to Higgs' for dinner. They had everything ready. We found everything had run all right at home and they had had the threshers here. Mon Oct 11, 1937 -- We washed and I was getting adjusted to work again. Fri Oct 22, 1937 -- In afternoon, Laurel, wife Ida and her sister Ruth Spinney were here for supper and Perry Drost came from camp. We had chicken stew again. I bought 8¼ pounds pork from Eben Varney, $1.25. Perry Drost came up on boat, was here for supper and stayed all night. Sat Oct 23, 1937 -- It rained hard in afternoon. Perry & Gladys Drost went out to Wes Buckingham's, came back in afternoon. Sun Oct 24, 1937 -- It rained all forenoon. We had no SS. In afternoon it cleared up. In evening Bea & I and Carl, Helen & Annie went over to Danforth in Mr Crane's car with Dan Stacey driving, to the wedding reception of Alton Farrell & Grace Gould. Tue Nov 9, 1937 -- Trucks were coming in forenoon and unloading in yard onto teams that were taking it to the Logan. They took 3 spans of horses and quantities of hay and other stuff. The boat got caught on a rock and they could not get down to camp. 4 men came back here and had supper and stayed all night. Wed Nov 10, 1937 -- The four men who stayed here all night had breakfast and then went away on the boat. Thu Nov 11, 1937 -- No entry. Fri Nov 12, 1937 -- Josie Gould was here in afternoon. We cleaned and put on outside windows. Hanford Gould and Pearl Boone was here for short call in afternoon. Leslie Farrell and Dorothy Dwyer were married in Amity by Mrs Cora Bubar, Justice of Peace. Wed Nov 17, 1937 -- The boys came home in forenoon. Perry & Gladys went to Ellis' and stayed to supper. I went down town in eening on Laurel's truck. Bea & I went to meeting in Methodist church. Rev Mr Pavey from Danforth preached. Thu Nov 18, 1937 -- Perry went to Houlton on Laurel's truck. In afternoon Lizzie Graham and Edith Graham were here. Fri Nov 19, 1937 -- I made cookies in forenoon and Gladys raveled up sweater which I intend to knit over again. I was down to Bea's in p.m. Perry is going to saw pulp with Ellis and they took their things and went up there to board. Sat Nov 20, 1937 -- John, Laurel & Norman went hunting, got two deer. It snowed all day. Sun Nov 21, 1937 -- We had Sabbath School in forenoon. There were 17 present and 8 were men from the camp. John was here for breakfast, he came up to get Norman to go for the deer, he was afraid something might get them before Monday. They brought them home before went to SS. Mon Nov 22, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. John Flemming was here for dinner. I sold him 2 cows and 1 old sheep. Received $52 for all. Paid him $7 for calf. Newton Foster died on Green Mountain at the home of William Boone, aged 80 years. Tue Nov 23, 1937 -- Villa ironed. I was cooking apples for sauce to keep them from rotting in forenoon. Norman & Carl went to Houlton with Laurel on truck. Lizzie Graham and I were down to Bea's in afternoon. Wed Nov 24, 1937 -- Just after Norman got up to build the fire, Laurel came after me to go down, Ida was sick. After I got there, he had to go to Orient to telephone for Dr. Curtis. They came after a time and there was born a little still born baby girl. We dressed and made it look as well as we could and put it in a little while covered box and John & Laurel took it in the p.m. to the cemetery and buried it in the family lot. Thu Nov 25, 1937 -- I came home the night before and left Laurel to take care of Ida. We brought her down to the front room where she would be warm and easy tended. Laurel came after me in morning. Ida had not got along fine during night, but Bea was in bed and could not move without pain. I doctored her and put hot water bottle to pain, took care of Ida and Helen & I did the work. Fri Nov 26, 1937 -- When I went down Bea was a little better, but still unable to get out of bed. I waited on Ida myself and Helen and I waited on Bea and did the work. Got along real well. Ida feels real well. Sat Nov 27, 1937 -- Bea was around some. I was down to take care of Ida and help what I could. Helen did most of cleaning. Sun Nov 28, 1937 -- I went down in morning. Laurel has been taking me and bringing me home. Changed Ida's clothes and bedding, we listened to two sermons on radio. Bea was around. Ida did not rest very well through day. I came home early. Laurel could take care of her. Mon Nov 29, 1937 -- I was home most of day and made mince meat. Laurel was home and did the washing with Helen's help and Bea to tell them what to do. Tue Nov 30, 1937 -- I went down in morning. Vivian Buckingham and Tressa Farrell were there before me. Vivian cooked cookies and Tressie stayed in room with Ida. We had three men from camp for dinner. I let Ida sit up in chair a little while. I came home early. Laurel took load of wood to Houlton. Wed Dec 1, 1937 -- Laurel hauled hay for Frank Way. I went down in p.m., let Ida sit in chair and knit a little while. Edith Graham and Arlene and her children were there in afternoon, and Jennie for all day. Thu Dec 2, 1937 -- Ida stayed in bed all day. Laurel was hauling hay again all day. Went to Houlton and Woodstock in afternoon. Norman & Guy Leeman went with him. Fri Dec 3, 1937 -- I worked home in forenoon, was down to Higgs' in afternoon. Ida was up and dressed and came to table for meals. Laurel was hauling hay. Sat Dec 4, 1937 -- I went to Houlton with Laurel, he took up a load of wood. We got back about 3 o'clock. I bought me a dress. Ida & Laurel went back to their own room to sleep. Sun Dec 5, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. I rested awhile in p.m. Annie was here and stayed awhile. I called awhile at Jennie's, she was sick. Harry and Essie Graham were there. Mon Dec 6, 1937 -- We washed in a.m. In afternoon Bea & Ida walked up here and stayed for tea. Laurel came after them in evening. Tue Dec 7, 1937 -- Norman went to Houlton with Laurel. I was knitting on glove. Wed Dec 8, 1937 -- I was up to Jennie's in morning to get Perry to come and help kill pig. In afternoon Perry and Norman killed pig. Perry & Gladys were down here in evening. I spent afternoon fixing my dress. Thu Dec 9, 1937 -- Perry & Gladys went home. Got a ride as far as Woodstock on Ray Graham's truck. I went down to Bea's in afternoon. Fri Dec 10, 1937 -- I went to Corner with Laurel & Norman. They were hauling wood to Bridge. I went to Woodstock with May & John Moore, stopped in Houlton both ways. I paid Dr. O'Connell $20 being the last due on Will's Dr. bill. Had my eyes tested by Dr. Campbell (Grover). Stayed at Sam Collier's all night. Sat Dec 11, 1937 -- Left Sam's in morning, called at Clyde Veysey's and visited at Grotty Gould's and had din-ner. And went on mail to Alfred Howe's, visited there and stayed all night. Sun Dec 12, 1937 -- Went with Alfred and Clare to Andrew Richardson's and stopped at Sam's when I came back and got a ride home with Horace Bartlett. Clarence and Burleigh Buckingham and Carl were here in afternoon. Mon Dec 13, 1937 -- It stormed and we did not wash. I was knitting on gloves for Annie for Christmas, got them too small. Tue Dec 14, 1937 -- We washed. I put in all my spare time knitting. Wed Dec 15, 1937 -- Bea sent up word Laurel would take us to Canterbury any time; we had better kill chickens. We killed and dressed four. Lizzie Graham and Lizzie Harvey called. Thu Dec 16, 1937 -- We killed and got ready 20 chickens, put in the day at it. Laurel & Ida went to Fredericton and turned in their old truck and brought home a new one. Fri Dec 17, 1937 -- Laurel came up in morning to show me his new truck. Took me by surprise. I did not know he was going to get it. In afternoon, he took Bea & I and all our chickens to Canterbury. We exchanged them for supplies. John & Norman went on back of truck. It was the school closing. Sat Dec 18, 1937 -- I was home working around all day. Norman went to Houlton on truck with Laurel and Ida who went to Debec to spend the weekend. Norman came back with Alton Farrell. Carl took car and the rest of family went out to Mountain to concert. Sun Dec 19, 1937 -- We had SS in forenoon. Bea came up here for dinner in afternoon. We were up calling on Jeannie. Phyllis came home from Houl-ton. Mon Dec 20, 1937 -- Bea & Ida went to Houlton to do Christmas shopping. Norman went also. Carl cut up my pig's head and I made head cheese. Tue Dec 21, 1937 -- Wilfred Price brought 4 men with him and took down the store house they had at the Logan and put it all on one truck and took it to St. Croix. Norman worked with team hauling lumber from Logan. I went to town with Laurel on truck, called on the Lydic's and Josie. Talked a few minutes with Bertha Clark. Wed Dec 22, 1937 -- Cleaned house and cooked some getting ready for Christmas. Thu Dec 23, 1937 -- Finished cleaning up house and put up trimmings for Christmas and finished gloves for Helen. Cooked some. Fri Dec 24, 1937 -- Finished my cake, cooking, cooked bread, wrapped up all my Christmas parcels and got my fowls ready for the oven and in evening Villa and I walked down to Bea's to see the Christmas tree & trimmings. Sat Dec 25, 1937 -- Christmas morning. I am up around early to get everything ready and go down to Bea's to see the tree unloaded. I expected them all up here for dinner. I stayed until after we heard the King speak over the radio, then we all came up here for dinner. Mrs Frank Patterson died sometime before morning at her home in Forest City, NB. Sun Dec 26, 1937 -- Stormy all day. Have been in house all day. Carl & Melvin Buckingham called in afternoon. Vivian & Melvin walked to town. We had no SS. Mrs Patterson's funeral to place in afternoon. Mon Dec 27, 1937 -- We washed in forenoon. I was up to Jennie's awhile in afternoon. I worked on two aprons and got them finished so I could wear them. Tue Dec 28, 1937 -- I made an apron for Villa which she had cut out. Mrs Harvey came in afternoon and stayed to tea and while she was here, I finished footing a sock. Wed Dec 29, 1937 -- Doing general house work. Clarence Buckingham called awhile after dinner. Thu Dec 30, 1937 -- I was down to Bea's awhile in afternoon. Commenced a blouse for Helen. Fri Dec 31, 1937 -- Got invitation to Jeannie Graham's to supper. I went, took knitting work. Bea & Lizzie Harvey and Annie Higgs were there for tea. We stayed until nine o'clock p.m. Carl & Annie went to town with horse and pung. The last day of old year which leaves us all well and much to be thank the good Lord for. |
