Drowned at Vanceboro Mabel Cropley, Aged 6, Lost Life in St. Croix River Yesterday Afternoon

McAdam, July 14, [1943] Mabel Cropley, 6, of Vanceboro, Me., was drowned this afternoon while bathing near the CPR railway bridge which spans the St. Croix River at Vanceboro, Me. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Miles Cropley of Vanceboro and with a number of other children was in bathing in the river when she got beyond her depth and was drowned before help could reach her.

The body was recovered and artifical respiration given but it was useless. Dr. Jacobs of Woodland, Me., coroner for Washington County, viewd the body and deemed an in quest unnecessary. She is survived by her parents, two sisters and one brother. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ------

Buried At Vanceboro Mabel Cropley, Drowned in St. Croix Had Many at Her Funeral

Vanceboro, Me., July 17, [1943] Funeral services for Mabel, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Miles Cropley, who was drowned in the St. Croix River on July 14th, were held Saturday afternoon from the Methodist Church., Rev Mr Tayldor of Danforth, officiating. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends and many beautiful flowers. Miss Thelma Kellogg sang Safe in the Arms of Jesus and Mrs Birdine and Miss Kellogg sang Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.

Pall-bearers were Billy Tracey, Harlan Cole, Jerry and VAnce Crandlemire. Interment was in the local cemetery. Out of town people who attended the funeral were Mr and Mrs F.D. Richards and daughter, Phyllis of Auburn and Mr and Mrs Philip Cropley of Bancroft.

FOSTERVILLE, N.B. - Maretta Ann "Rita" Durgin, 80, wife of the late Austin G. Durgin, died April 20, 2001, at a Woodstock, N.B. hospital. She was born in Forest City, N.B., Aug. 25, 1920, the daughter of Guy and Florence (Leeman) Cropley. Rita was a communicant of St. Ann Catholic Church, Danforth, Maine. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Maurice B. Cropley. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Cropley of Forest City; a brother-in-law, Maurice B. Durgin of Hanover, N.H., and Forest City, as well as several nieces, nephews, special cousins and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time), Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Bartlett Funeral Home in Danforth, Maine, with the Rev. Roger Cyr, officiating. Committal service will be at the International Cemetery, Forest City, N.B. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to a charity of choice.

WESTON - Merle E. "Fred" Cropley, 67, husband of Una (Lee) Cropley, died March 27, 2004, at a Houlton healthcare facility. He was born April 8, 1936, in Danforth, the son of Wesley "Ben" and Geneva (Young) Cropley. Mr. Cropley worked in the woods industry, enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching the Red Sox. He was a U.S. Army veteran. In addition to his wife, Una, he is survived by his children, Paula and her husband, Maurice McLaughlin, of Stafford Springs, Conn., Trudy and her husband, Chuck Johnson, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Dawn and her husband, Dwayne Young, of Weston, Sandra Cropley of Bangor, Amber and her husband, Dave Brown, of Manchester, Conn., Wesley and his wife, Deborah Cropley, of Stafford Springs, Conn., and Teresa Cropley of Danforth; sisters, Violet and Judd Frye of Danforth, Barbara Cropley of Houlton, Glenna and John Crone of Danforth, Anita Barnes of Danforth, Veronica and Robert Crone of Danforth, Sheila and Arnold Estabrook of Amity; brothers, Franklin and Margeret Cropley of Braintree Mass., James and Glenna Cropley of Danforth; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. MILO 'MIKE' CROPLEY DANFORTH - Milo "Mike" Cropley, 85, husband of Mary (Gould) Cropley, died May 22, 2002, at his home, after a long illness. He was born in Danforth, Feb. 14, 1917, the son of Charles and Frances (Carr) Cropley. Mike was a jack-of-all-trades, a woodsman, welder, heavy equipment operator and contractor. His hobby was crafts from woodworking and he had a great love for hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband and dad, and was a beloved grandfather. He was quite a man. In addition to his wife, Mary of Danforth; he is survived by a son, Milo Cropley and his wife, Ginger of Mars Hill; a daughter, Nadine Matlock and her husband, Lee of Ft. Worth, Texas; a son-in-law, Jerry Stagges of Londonderry N.H.; a brother-in-law, Donald Moody of Danforth; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Stagges, seven brothers and three sisters. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, at the Clay Funeral Home-Bartlett Chapel, Houlton Road, Danforth. BREWER - Mona E. Ladd, 95, died Jan. 16, 2005, at a local nursing home. She was born March 24, 1909, in Bancroft, the daughter of Miles and Ruby (Cox) Cropley. Mona was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Brewer, the Milwee Chapter No. 198 OES, Orrington and the Rebekahs. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph E. Ladd; and a son, David Ladd. Surviving are her children, Edward Ladd and his wife, Rae, Dana Ladd and his wife, Irene, Judith L. Roundy, Alan Ladd and his wife, Lee, Alden and his wife, Eunice and James Ladd; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and her half sister, Adelia R. Peck. At her request there will be no services. Burial will be in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery, Prospect. For those who wish memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice. BANGOR - Muriel Irene Malone, 71, died June 9, 2003, at her home in Bangor. She was born Oct. 21, 1931, in Danforth, the daughter of Clarence and Dillis (Ellingwood) Cropley. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Lewis W. Malone of Bangor; Ella and her husband, David Byers, of East Corinth, Nellie and her husband, Doug Gaudette, of Hampden, Ivan Malone and his wife, Linda, of Houlton, and Judy Malone of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Cory Byers, Jeffery Cropley, Carrie and Katie Gaudette, Kara Gaudette-Hartery, Melissa and Heidi Malone, and Toni Bernaiche; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Holt, Jay Lebretton, Jeremy Cropley and Evan Gaudette; four brothers, Philip, Nelson, Roger, and Gary Cropley; four sisters, Priscilla Moody, Virginia Cropley, Donna Grass and Sally Johnson; several nieces and nephews. Muriel was predeceased by one daughter, Carol Malone; one son, Robert Cropley; and two brothers, Thomas "JR" Ellingwood and Bobby Cropley. A graveside service will be held 12 noon Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the Riverside Cemetery, Haynesville. Elizabeth "Betty" Shirley Chase of White's Mountain, while surrounded by her family went to be with The Lord on August 25, 2007 at the age of 75. Born in Anderson, Westmorland Co. on August 9, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Wesley Crossman and Alma (Bainbridge). Elizabeth is survived by Darrell, her husband of 55 years; two daughters, Diane Trail and her husband, Aubrey of Maugerville, and Charis Boone and her husband, Jeff of Hartland; two sons, Mark Chase and his wife, Karen of Vancouver, and Philip Chase and his wife, Daniela of Innisfil, Ontario; two sisters, Joan Henry of Fredericton and Esther McKnight of Florida; 12 grandchildren, Andrew, Stephen, Heather, Noel, Isaac, Hilary, Nathan, Krista, Joel, Sacha, Tanya and Jonathan; two great grandchildren, Stephen and Annika; as well as several nieces and nephews.
