The deceased was born in New Brunswick 73 years ago, of the late Mr and Mrs Bamford Stiles. Widow of the late Charles Boone. Survives: 2 daughters Mrs Susie Tidd of Houlton, Mrs Edith Herbert Tompkins of Lakeville, N.B., 5 Sons, Harvey Boone of North Lake, Herbert and Henry Boone of Centerville N.B., John Boone of Boston, and Charles B. Boone of Portland. 3 Sisters Mrs William Trafford of Fort Fairfield, Mrs Susie Caldwell of Fredericton, and Mrs John Fires of St. John N.B., 2 brothers, George Stiles of Bridgewater and Wesley Stiles of Stockton Springs.

At the Oromocto Public Hospital, Oromocto, N.B., on August 15, 2003, Elsie Wilhemina Boone of McAdam, N.B., widow of Baden Gibson Boone, daughter of the late Frank and Elsie (Taylor) Storr. Born in Baddeck, Nova Scotia on July 2, 1915. Survived by daughters Joan Daigle of Salisbury N.B., Sandra (Gary) Lackie of Hampton N.B., Shirley (Ronnie) Saunders of Harvey Station N.B., ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by daughter Carol Russell and sister Frances Carroll. Resting at The S.O. Bruce Weldon Thomas of Royal Road, NB, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Bruce was born in Fredericton on January 26, 1945 to the late Douglas and Florence (Wilkins) Thomas. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Scott Thomas; brother, Vernon Thomas and sister, Karen White (Thomas). He is survived by son, Weldon Thomas; daughter, Kathryn Nason (Scott); grandchildren, Tristan, Jordan and Madison Thomas, Alexandria Nason and Kassidy Campbell, Logan Ryan and his mother, Brianne Ryan; brothers, Leigh Thomas, Ross Thomas (Heather); sisters, Dianne Irvine (Bev), Brenda Hayes (Kerry), Janet Merritt (Bob), Sherry Munn (Dwight) and Lori Thomas (Ross Griffiths); brother-in-law, Floyd White (Gail Anderson); several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 6-9 pm. The Funeral Service will take place at York Funeral Home's T. Not all returning veterans from WW I were heroes. One in particular was a cold-blooded murderer.
On November 24th, 1924, he shot and killed his two nieces, Necia, age 10, and Cynthia, age 14, daughters of Ward and Minnie Foster of Fosterville. Five months later on April 25, 1925, he hanged for his crime.
Who was he? Did the war affect his mind to the extent he knew not wrong from right? One can only speculate. With certainty it can safely be said he was a liar.
He was born Darius H. Thornton to Matilda Thornton previous to her marriage to Alfred Nason of Nackawick. The date of his actual birth is open to question. Some sources give 1888; another source says 1883, and he says 1885. Places of his birth range from Victoria County to Woodstock to Nacawick (or Southampton, Ritchie, Pokiok, as those places were known then).
On October 17, 1906, he married Ada Saunders, a 32 year old widow with three children, of Victoria Corner, NB. He gave his age on the marriage licence as 23, indicating he was born in 1883. By 1910, they were living in Houlton, Maine, with the addition of his son, Harry L Thornton, born May 18, 1908 in Woodstock. He listed his occupation as a farmer and also served in the 67th Regiment Militia in Woodstock 1904-1906. He attended Camp Sussex for training on three different occasions.
September 27, 1916, he was back in Canada to enlist in the Army under the name Harry Darwin Williams. He swore under oath before JP Wetmore in Saint John that he was single, a laborer and was born on Jul 6, 1885. At that time, he stood 5'9", light hair, blue eyes and weighed about 158 lbs. He had no physical infirmities and was declared fit for active duty. There is no evidence to suggest a birth certificate was required at enlistment. If it had been, the falsehoods would have been uncovered.
Thus, Harry Darwin Williams, Reg # 1257839, was assigned to the 9th Siege Battery of the 67th Regiment and shipped out to Liverpool, England, on August 2 1917. He eventually ended up in France June 1918 then back to England in December, 1918 complaining of flat feet. There is no mention in his record of him being under fire, or near the front. A medical doctor certified his left foot was completely flat, and his right foot partially. Walking any distance caused him severe pain. He was reassigned to the labor pool in England. On February 18, 1919, Williams set sail for Canada. On March 15, 1919, he was discharged from the Army. One might surmise his courage was lacking and used his flat feet as a means of avoiding battle. He did not mention this condition on enlistment and it is questionable if it would develop in a year or so.
During his tour of duty, he assigned $5 a month from his pay to his mother, Matilda Fish (she had married Josh Fish earlier).
When asked during his trial for murder why he changed his name, he replied, "to get away from my wife".
The person who apprehended Williams (Thornton) the morning after the murders was Claude Peck, an uncle of the two girls. Claude was also a returned veteran, served in France, wounded at Vimy Ridge with gunshot to chest and later wounded again with shrapnel in both legs. Quite a contrast between the two.

Marked Birthday Matilda Fish, of Fosterville, is honored by Friends on Her 86th Birthday Fosterville, March 1—Mrs Matilda Fish, who lives at the home of her daugher, Mrs Ward Foster and family, celebrated her 86th birthday, Thursday, Feb 26 and a number of her friends gathered to spend the afternoon with her and to enjoy the beautiful supper prepared and served by members of the family. There were four beautiful birthday cakes presented to Mrs Fish, besides many other nice gifts, and cards of greeting and good wishes.
Those present included Mrs Alfred Veysey, Mrs Clyde Veysey, Mrs Grottie Gould, Mrs E. Watson, Mrs Same Collier, Mrs Melvin Buckingham and little son Danny, Mrs Everett Farrell, Mrs M. Farrell, and Vivian Buckingham of Fosterville; Mrs Fred Boone and small daughter, Gail, Mrs Elias Foster, Mrs Alton Wood, Mr and Mrs Beecher Foster and small son Ronnie of Green Mountain; and Mrs John Higgs of Pemberton Ridge.
Before the guests left for their homes in the early evening, a portion of Scripture, Psalm 121, was read by Mrs Elias Foster, Mrs Clyde Veysey offered prayer and all joined in singing the hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Everyone reported a pleasant gathering and wished Mrs Fish many more happy birthdays.

Green Mountain - Funeral services for Mrs Frank (Margaret) DeWitt were held at the late home, Green Mountain, with Lic. Robert Wilson officiating. Bearers were Elias Foster, Clarence Boone, Floyd Smith, and Eric Smith, and burial was in the family plot, Fosterville.
Mrs DeWitt is survived by two sons, Walter of Arizona, and Leslie at home; five daughters, Mrs Mae Rollins, Hainesville; Grace, Portland, Mrs Samuel Kinney (Elizabeth) Portland; Mrs Fred Graham (Ethel), Pemberton Ridge; and Mrs Sedences Wood (Alice) Fosterville, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of J.(James) Douglas Tomilson, missing since December 1929, has finally been solved. The anxiety of his relatives regarding his fate has been shared by hundreds of friends.
In October 1929, the young man went to work on Wyman Dam at Bingham, Me., In the latter part of November, becoming tired, he obtained a week’s leave of absence. His idea of a rest was hiking through the woods. So, after coming to Greenville Junction by train, he left his suitcase in a hotel room there, and proceeded for a tramp through the woods.
In a letter to his mother, Mrs. Maurice Tomilson, of Tay Creek, written from a camp on Moosehead Lake, he described his hike as most enjoyable, said he was feeling rested and will, and would write the following Sunday from Bingham. On same date he wrote to his brother, also at Bingham, asking him to forward his mail to Rockwood and that was the last heard from him. When he did not return, and it was learned he had not returned home, his brother went to Rockwood to see if the letters had ben forwarded. They were still unclaimed and he could find no further clue.
After weeks of suspense the matter was placed in the hands of Chief of Police, N. Jones of Fredericton, who cooperated with the American Consul at Fredericton, The British Consul at Portland and the State Police. No clue was available until Saturday, November 8th when Guy W. Herrick, proprietor of a sporting camp at Indian Pond, accompanied by a party of hunters scouring the woods for game, came upon the remains of a body. The doctor found upon examination the identification papers and picture to prove, beyond a doubt, that the remains were those of the missing man, J. Douglas Tomilson, of Tay Settlement.
The father was at once notified by Sheriff Elton Markham, of Skowhegan, and he and two brothers went to claim the remains. It was then learned that the young man had had supper with Mr. Besale of Indian Park and had then proceeded to walk to Greenville Junction on his way back to work. He was found four and one half miles from Moore’s Siding. He had cut brush for a small fire, the charred embers of which remained; had then evidently laid his head on a log for a rest and dropped asleep, to waken no more in this world.
His personal effects were found with the remains well protected by a leather coat which he wore.
The funeral took place from his home on Wednesday, November 12th and was very largely attended.
The deceased had taught to schools in Williamsburg, Tay Mills, and North Lake, and friends from these places as well as all districts adjoining his home came to pay their last tribute to one whom all loved and respected. His four brothers, Claude, Stanley, Leigh and Keith, acted as pallbearers and tenderly committed his remains to their last resting place in the cemetery adjoining the United Church of which deceased was a member. The church service was conducted by Rev. Walter Ramsey, of North Lake, a valued friend of deceased, assisted by Rev. Roland Davidson, pastor of the United Church,

August 2, 1952 The death occurred last evening at his home in Needham Street of Maurice Tomilson, after a short illness, age 75 years. Mr Tomilson was born in Tay Creek, the eldest child of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Gaskin) Tomilson and lived there until 1946 carrying on farming. In that year he came to Fredericton. He was a member of the United Church at Tay Creek, serving as Elder for some years, transferring to St. Paul's in this City. He was a member of Victoria Lodge, No. 13, IOOF and of Graham Lodge, L.O.L., upright and honest and his death is regretted. Last year Mr Tomilson achieved a long standing wish to visit all his sisters. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Ada Miller, of Tay Creek; five sons, Claude, of Houlton; Stanley, of Halifax; Leigh, of Woodstock; Keith, of Charlottetown; and William, of Tay Creek; three daughters, Mrs Henry Verill, Tay Creek; Mrs Harold Brewer, Caribou, Me.; and Mrs Frank Dohaney, of Toronto; two brothers, Angus, of Houlton; and Hazen of Tay Creek; seven sisters, Mrs Arthur Ayres, Byford, Mass.; Mrs Robert Raven, Glooucester, Mass.; Mrs Charles Tomilson, Stanley; Mrs Everett Bond, Hopedale, Mass.; Mrs Guy McMullen, Magaguadavic; Mrs William Gibson, Dover, N.H.; Mrs Andrew Morrison, Springfield, V.T.; 11 grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
The body is resting at his home until Sunday when it will be taken at one o'clock to St. Paul's Church where service will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. A.J. Forbes. Burial will be made in Tay Creek, where the service will be carried out by Rev. Rupert Usher, follwed by the ritual of the Oddfellows.

Taymouth Soldier Killed in Action Tpr. M Leigh Tomilson Went to France, July 6th - Killed in August [1944] Word has been received by Mrs M. Leigh Tomilson, Tay Settlement, that her husband, Tpr. M. Leigh Tomilson had been killed in action in France on August 23rd.
Tpr. Tomilson enlisted in September, 1941, and went overseas in September, 1942. He went to France on July 6th with a Manitoba Armored Corps, having been transferred to it a week before going to France. He had a great many friends who will learn of his death with regret. He was 32 years of age, son of Mr and Mrs Maurice Tomilson, and was born at Tay Settlement. He is survived by his widow, his parents, four brothers, Claude Tomilson, Houlton, Me., Stanley Tomilson, Fredericton, Keith Tomilson, Charlottetwon, and William Tomilson, at home, and three sisters, Mrs henry Verrill, Tay Settlement, Mrs Harold Brewer, Washington, D.C., and Miss Edith Tomilson at home Reported Killed, Believed Living Mrs M.L. Tomilson Has Letter From Padre Saying Husband Alive [1944] A short time ago Mrs M. Leigh Tomilson of Woodstock received word that her husband, Tpr. M. Leigh Tomilson, had been killed in action on August 23rd. Last week she received word that her husband was living and that he had been taken prisoner by the Germans. She has just received the following letter written August 31st from Capt. J.L. Duncan, padre of the 18th Canadian Armored Regiment (12D), Canadian Army overseas, which will be read with interest by his friends and relatives in York County where he was born.
Dear Mrs Tomilson- I know you must be very upset and worried about your husband and I do sympathize with you. Whether the first telegram sent to you was received I do not know, but unfortunately the first reprot we had was that your husband had been a fatal casualty.
I was able to make very definite inquiries last Sunday (Aug 27) and it can be very safely stated that he is a prisoner of war. It is not possible to give you many details at present except in the engagement concerning him. He escaped from the car and made his way to the house of the people whose name is enclosed. This woman tended to him and in conversation with her, she assured me he was not wounded badly. While he was there, a small group of Germans came and found him and took him away with them. The German arm is on the run as you know and there are many small groups cattered around.
There is a very stong possibility that your husband is still back in the countryside through which we have passed. On the other hand, the Germans who have him may have gone back beyond us now. Until you hear defintely take the assurance that is contained in this information. I do hope you receive word quickly. I realize what a terrible strain you are under.
Enclosed are two letters and a group picture which your husband threw under the bed when the Germans came. It showed great presence of mind on his part, very much in the same way as the rest of his work.
Mr and Mrs Cuisset would appreciate word of your husband. They were very impressed with him. I'm afraid the information will have to wait until the war is over.

Prisoner of War {1944] The family of Tpr. M. Leigh Tomilson have been advised by the Minister of National Defence, through the International Red Cross at Geneva, that he is now a prisoner of war in No. 86376 Camp Stalag, No 7A. He was previously reported missing.

 Now Safe in England [1945] Word came last night to Mrs M. Leigh Tomilson, Woodstock, that her husband, Tpr. Tomilson, who had been a prisoner of War for the past nine months in Germany, has reached the United Kingdom and hoped soon to be home. He sent the cable to his wife, who in turn got in touch with relatives in Fredericton. Grat pleasure was expressed at the release of Mr Tomilson.
